Empower Series - 2015 presented by the Richmond Centre for Disability: Parenting With Disabilities (Jewelles Smith, speaker)

The purpose of this series of workshops is to promote the empowerment and independent living of persons with disabilities. On Tuesday, March 31st, Jewelles Smith will speak about Parenting With Disabilities. The workshop will focus on: facing day to day challenges; financial barriers and solutions; legal situations and much more more.

Jewelles A. Smith is a mother, artist and activist. She is currently pursuing a PhD at the University of British Columbia-Okanagan campus. She will be conducting a human rights monitoring project documenting the narratives of disabled mothers in Canada. Smith holds a Master of Arts in Women’s Studies, and a Bachelor of Arts in Women’s Studies and English from Simon Fraser University. She has received training from (DRPI) Disability Rights Promotion International on human rights monitoring. Smith also attended WHRI (the Women’s Human Rights Institute) and received training on women, international law, and human rights.

Jewelles is currently on the board of directors for Pacific DAWN (DisAbled Women’s Network), NEADS (National Educational Association of Disabled Students), and the CCD (Council of Canadians with Disabilities).
