Vacant Seats on NEADS' Board of Directors

To whom it may concern:

Currently, the National Educational Association of Disabled Students (NEADS) is seeking applicants for the position of Newfoundland and Labrador Representative on the Board of Directors. The Board is looking to fill the positions by end of March 2007. At this time, we are inviting interested individuals to submit an application to take on these roles.

The National Educational Association of Disabled Students is a consumer organization, with a mandate to encourage the self-empowerment of post-secondary students with disabilities. NEADS advocates for increased accessibility at all levels so that disabled students may gain equal access to college or university education, which is their right. The Association provides information on services and programs for students with disabilities nationwide, publishes a regular newsletter, and conducts research on issues of importance to its members. Members include disabled students, educators, organizations and professional service providers. NEADS is governed by a 12 person Board of Directors which represents each of the provinces and the territories. Board members are all consumers with disabilities from their respective province/territory, with the exception of the Open Representative, who can be from any province/territory.

Persons who are interested in joining the board of directors must fulfill the following criteria:

  1. Be a Regular Member of NEADS, or willing to become a Regular Member. A Regular Member is defined as any person with a disability who is attending a post-secondary institution, or who has participated in a post-secondary program within the past two years.
  2. Reside in, and/or attend a post-secondary institution in, the province that they wish to represent.

The members of the Board of Directors are responsible for guiding all projects of the organization and overseeing our ongoing operations. Each board member is responsible to represent the interests and concerns of students in their province/territory to the Board and to give input to projects via other communications between meetings. Board meetings are held in Ottawa, Ontario twice a year.

The successful applicant will represent the jurisdictions of Newfoundland and Labrador until November, 2008. In November of 2008, a national conference will take place where the successful applicant may run in an election and be voted onto the Board again by the general members. The term of a Board member lasts two years from election.

If a position on the Board of Directors is of interest to you, and you meet the eligibility criteria, please complete and return the enclosed application form to our office by March 9th, 2007. Members of the Board of Directors will take all applications under review and select the candidates that the directors consider most qualified to assume the positions of Nova Scotia and Territories Representatives.

Applications shall include two letters of reference and a resumé.

Should you have any questions about the position, please do not hesitate to contact our National Coordinator, Frank Smith at (613) 526-8008 or info@neads.ca. Further information about the organization and its current projects is available on the organization's website at www.neads.ca.
