Call for Abstracts for the Alliance for Equality of Blind Canadians national conference

The 2019 Conference and AGM of the Alliance for Equality of Blind Canadians will take place at The Albert at Bay Suite Hotel, 435 Albert Street, Ottawa, from Friday, April 26 to Sunday, April 28, 2019.

The theme for our upcoming conference is: "Does Accessibility Equal Inclusion?"

As in previous years, we will devote Friday to a series of workshops and we welcome your proposals. The conference committee seeks submissions from but not limited to consumers who are blind, deafblind or partially sighted, researchers, government, private enterprise, not-for-profit and/or charitable organizations, with a particular focus on removing barriers to accessibility, and promoting inclusion for all.

Topics may include, but are not limited to:

Accessibility
Advocacy
Braille
Citizenship and Social Participation
Copyright and Library Access
Education
Employment
Human Rights
Rehabilitation Services and Independent Living
Technology
Conference Audience

Please note, attendees at the 2019 Conference may include blind, deafblind and partially sighted individuals , vision professionals and teachers, parents and others with an interest in removing barriers faced by many Canadians. Some of these individuals may be well-versed in technology and have a personal understanding of the blind, deafblind and partially sighted community, while others will be complete newcomers to the organization and the environment. As such, presenters should not assume that the audience will have significant background knowledge of the issues you wish to discuss.

Presentation Format

As many participants will be blind, deafblind or partially sighted, speakers are encouraged to be cognizant of the accessibility challenges that PowerPoint or video presentations may pose. All presentation information and documentation should be provided in alternative formats (large print, braille or electronic) in advance wherever possible. Additional information will be provided to successful applicants once participation has been confirmed.

As all conference proceedings are recorded and broadcast live via an Internet audio stream for those who cannot attend, the use of a microphone is required. This will also assist those who may be hard of hearing to benefit equally.

Each presenter will have a 1 hour time slot in which to deliver their workshop, inclusive of time for questions and discussion. Presenters will be expected to bring their own laptop or other devices, along with any adapters they might need. If you have any other special requirements, please indicate this in your submission and we will investigate whether we can accommodate your needs.

Application Process

Please complete the "Abstract Submission Form" (download link below) and email it to submissions@blindcanadians.ca no later than Friday, January 25, 2019.

The selection of abstracts is done by a committee who aims to present a cohesive, well-rounded variety of workshops in support of the Conference's overall theme. The primary contact for each abstract will be informed of the submission status (accepted or rejected) by mid-February. You will be informed of the deadline by which you must confirm your participation. The review committee reserves the right to edit abstracts and biographies, but will seek your final approval before this information appears in the conference program. Further details will be provided at that time. Please note, your acceptance as a presenter does not automatically register you for the conference.

For further information, please email submissions@blindcanadians.ca or call 1-800-561-4774 and leave a message.

Sincerely,
The 2019 Conference Workshop Team
Alliance for Equality of Blind Canadians
