Non-Governmental Organizations
REACH
REACH is a non-profit organization providing legal assistance and referral
services to people with disabilities. It also provides education on disability
and human rights issues to lawyers, people with disabilities, service
providers and others.
The organization was formed in 1981, and receives approximately
5,000 calls per year from people with disabilities, on a range of issues
such as housing, employment, tax matters, and abuse. REACH holds
monthly seminars and annual conferences on disability issues. Although
the organization primarily serves people with disabilities in Ottawa and
area, it has been involved in a number of national research projects
regarding the participation of people with disabilities in post-secondary
education and law careers. Two publications of interest are: “Navigating
Law School and Beyond,” and “Advancing Professional Opportunities
and Employment Accommodations for Lawyers and Other Law Graduates
With Disabilities.”
