High School Transition

Transition Programs for Students with Disabilities

Online to Success Program

Queen's University is offering an on-line course for students with learning disabilities to help ease their transition from high school to university.

Called On-Line to Success, the 4-week on-line course is designed to help students understand the way they learn best, offer learning strategies and adaptive technology suited to their individual needs, and suggest ways for students to advocate for themselves.

“As spring approaches, we know that graduating high school students may be waiting for their acceptance packages from university with a little anxiety,” says Dr. Allyson Harrison, Clinical Director of the Regional Assessment and Resource Centre at Health, Counselling and Disability Services at Queen’s. “But for those with a learning disability, the anxiety level is often much greater, as these students anticipate the special challenges they face. This program aims to give these students a head start to success at university.”

It is estimated that about 10% of the high school population has a learning disability - defined as someone with average or above average intelligence who may experience difficulties in one or more of the following areas: listening, thinking, talking, reading, writing, spelling or math.

The Queen’s program includes an emphasis on skill building and participation in interactive discussions. In addition, students will be able to test a wide range of state-of-the-art technology designed for students with learning disabilities.

The course is open to any student with a learning disability who is accepted or on the waiting list for any Ontario university. In order to accommodate students who have a summer job or have a vacation planned, On-Line to Success can be completed on the student’s computer (at home, at school or at a public library) using Internet resources. Students can log in and work on the course readings, discussions, and assignments at their own pace.

All meals, accommodations and activities are covered. Travel bursaries may be available.

Tuition for On-Line to Success is $200, which includes all materials. Students who successfully complete the course will receive a $150 refund.
