Détails(The following description is from the Mad Students Society's website) The Mad Students Society (MSS) is a group organized for and run by students who have experienced the psychiatric system (known as psychiatric survivors and/or consumers). Mad Students Society works to create a community to empower, support and mobilize students who are currently or may in the future experience the psychiatric system. As a group we support each other, share similar experiences, learn about our history as a community, build from each other's strengths, identify barriers in the education system and address systemic discrimination. We also aim to create a space that is an alternative to bio-medical perspectives on emotional crisis. Our goal is to create an effective foundation for self-advocacy that has its roots in the history of the psychiatric survivor movement and is reflective of the socio-economic factors that impact our experiences. The MSS holds monthly peer support meetings. Advocacy issues are taken up by the MSS Collective. The MSS Collective is the central organizing committee and the main decision-making body for all issues related to the organization. The Collective gets together monthly. Terms of Reference: 1. Represents the voice of students in post-secondary education who have or are currently experiencing the psychiatric system. 2. Identifies barriers and shared experiences within the education system 3. Mobilizes and organizes students as an alternative voice to medical model understandings of madness 4. Addresses systemic discrimination within the education system 5. Works to develop an analysis of mad experience in order to create a framework for systemic and self advocacy 6. Works to create a community to Empower and support Mad Students 7. The Mad Students Society supports the history of the psychiatric survivor movement
