Dear colleagues, friends and fellow human rights advocates,
As part of this year's Conference of States Parties to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), the Canadian Human Rights Commission is hosting a side event on the intersection of disability rights and housing rights in Canada.
The Commission, in its role as the formal body responsible for monitoring the Government of Canada's implementation of the CRPD, and Canada's newly appointed Federal Housing Advocate are joining forces to monitor the intersection of disability rights and the right to housing in Canada. The Commission heard through its public engagement that housing is a top concern for people with disabilities in Canada, a situation only exacerbated by COVID.
The Federal Housing Advocate has a mandate to monitor and hold Canada to account for its international human rights obligations related to housing found in a number of instruments, including the CRPD. Together we would like to introduce our roles and innovative monitoring work we are beginning together. This will be followed by a panel discussion.
