What is a Saskatchewan Accessibility Act?
The purpose of a Saskatchewan Accessibility Act is to work towards a barrier free Province. The Act would ensure more consistent experiences of accessibility across the province by creating communities, workplaces and services that enable everyone to participate fully in society without barriers. This is achievable through the proactive identification, removal, and prevention of barriers to accessibility wherever people interact.

Progress Update

The October Throne Speech the Government - Saskatchewan Party committed to consulting [the community of people with disabilities] on a new Accessibility Act. The Throne Speech is silent on when the consultation will take place, who will be consulted, and how consultations will be carried out.

The Opposition - NDP supports consulting on a new Accessibility Act. David Forbes on behalf of the Opposition stated the following during the throne speech debate in the legislature “… I am looking forward to it, and I think it’s a good thing and needs to be done.”

Possible Discussion Topics

• What lessons can we learn from the consultation on the federal accessibility act?
• How should the Government - Saskatchewan Party consult with the community of persons with disabilities on a new Accessibility Act?
• How should the community of persons with disabilities prepare for government consultation on an Accessibility Act?
• What can we do as individuals and as community groups to help the process along?
