Self-Advocacy Workshops for Students with Disabilities: Communication for Self-Advocacy

Mar 9, 2020 11:30 AM to 12:20 PM
GH 110
Registration Deadline: Mar 9, 2020 09:00 AM

Communication skills are important for everybody but can be especially useful when you are asking for accommodations. Knowing how to ask for what you need can be an incredibly helpful tool. This workshop, part of a series on self-advocacy skills, will teach communication skills for disabled student self-advocacy on a university campus. These can include oral communication, written communication, and vulnerability in communication. You will learn some basic background information on self-advocacy, participate in communication skills building activities, and learn what some disabled students at McMaster have to say on the subject. The workshop has been designed and will be facilitated by a disabled student. We take an inclusive view of disability, and no attendee will be asked to disclose how they identify (e.g. those registered or not registered with Student Accessibility Services; those with physical, sensory, learning, developmental, mental health or other disabilities; those with mental health concerns; those identifying as Mad, Deaf, living with chronic illness, trauma, or addiction, etc.).

Workshop of is part of a project throught the MacPherson Insitute: "Politicizing Self-Advocacy: Improving Access to Learning Through Disabled Student Workshops".

If you have an accommodation need for a planned meeting, please e-mail careeraccess@mcmaster.ca. Should you require any materials sent in an alternate/accessible format, please advise.
