Accommodations and On-Campus Services

Learning Plans-A navigational tool for Adult Learners

The office of Disability Services at the Nova Scotia Community College has grown in the volume of services offered to students throughout the school’s 13 campuses, including a restructuring of the Academic Accommodations Plan. The previous support model, where accommodations were decided in isolation, lacked the capacity to accurately document students throughout their learning journey. A more incisive and holistic model of learning supports was developed, called the Learning Plan. In this session Murdena and Tammy will introduce the theoretical and practical aspects of Learning Plans. Although at the early stages of implementation, the shift to a more inclusive model of supports promises to bring learners more skills and knowledge of their own learning, as well as a greater understanding of supports they can access both on campus and in the wider community.

Post-secondary Transition Planning for Students with Disabilities

The college environment is substantially different from high school and every student must prepare to face new challenges and experiences - adjusting to living away from home for the first time, learning time management skills, adapting to new social roles and expectations, and meeting greater academic challenges. Project Disability, Awareness, Resources and Equal opportunity (DARE), a transition program coordinated by the Centre for Students with Disabilities at Algonquin College in Ottawa, is aimed to assist students in the transition to college. Project DARE is a free one day event that invites prospective students with mental illness, mobility impairments or Asperger’s syndrome to learn about the services available to them in the post-secondary environment and to meet with current Algonquin students also receiving disability accommodations.
