Ableism in the Academy: Who’s Listening?
Monday, May 15 | 1:00 – 2:30 p.m. Central Time 7-8:30 pm UK Time
Presented via Zoom – (Link below)

This event is hosted by the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences’ Office of Equity, Access & Participation, Disability Studies and College of Rehabilitation Sciences, along with the UM Office for Equity & Transformation.

The academy is very comfortable with the level of oppression experienced by disabled people. The assumption that a disabled person shows up is exceptional. “We are letting you in, but we are letting you in on our terms.”

The colonial bias toward disability is based on a medieval notion that education belongs to the elite. Ableism has been reinforced by the medicalization of disability and the medicalization of suffering. Disabilities studies sees the presence of disability as a human rights and social justice issue.

The purpose of this panel discussion is to discuss these concerns and provide concrete solutions to these substantive issues.
