National Educational Association of Disabled Students (NEADS) announces Gabrielle Veilleux-Verreault as the winner of the 2023 Canada Post Award for Students with Disabilities

(Ottawa, March 18, 2024)

The National Educational Association of Disabled Students and Canada Post are very pleased to announce Gabrielle Veilleux-Verreault as the 2023 recipient of the Canada Post Award for Students with Disabilities. Gabrielle is completing a PhD in Bioethics at Université de Montréal.

Valued at $10,000, the Canada Post Award for Students with Disabilities recognizes and celebrates the outstanding achievements of postsecondary students with disabilities who are leading by example and making a difference through knowledge sharing, community practice and innovation. The Award is open to students with disabilities who are enrolled in a degree-granting program in any discipline at the undergraduate or graduate level.

“For me, receiving the NEADS award is a reminder that even difficult conditions can blossom into great potential if the right environment and tools are available.

The support and love of those around me created a fertile environment in which I was able (though belated) to find the space I needed to grow and take my place. This award will allow me to pursue my activities, and I hope to be able to grow this garden of opportunity, where other souls, projects and ideas can also flourish."

– Gabrielle Veilleux-Verreault, PhD student in Bioethics, School of Public Health, Université de Montréal.

NEADS and Canada Post launched the Canada Post Award in 2020 to support access to education and the workforce for students with disabilities.

"I’m delighted to congratulate Gabrielle Veilleux-Verreault, this year’s recipient of the Canada Post Award for Students with Disabilities. In addition to excelling academically, Gabrielle has demonstrated exceptional leadership and humanitarian impact through knowledge mobilization and community involvement in engaging in activism and aid to help civilians of Ukraine.”

– Natasha Saltes, Director of Accessibility, Canada Post.

“We are so pleased to be able to offer Gabrielle this award. Gabrielle wholeheartedly embraces the traits of knowledge sharing, community practice and innovation, through her international humanitarian work in supporting the Ukrainian people, truly seeking to understand the realities of Ukrainians, and cleverly engaging in selfless support of others around her. NEADS would like to celebrate Gabrielle for the dedication and passion she brings to her work, while advocating for herself and others in her research.”
