Abilities Now: Youth - Leadership - Empower: A Youth Summit for Nova Scotians Living With Disabilities

The Abilities Now: Youth - Leadership - Empower Summit will focus on the question “What are the barriers to full participation within Nova Scotia for youth living with disabilities and what can we do to shift them together?”

The Summit is a three day, interactive gathering to be held near Camp Tidnish in Amherst, Nova Scotia (a fully accessible location) from May 29th - May 31st, 2015. It will bring together approximately 30 youth living with varying disabilities as well as adults who work with/for youth living with disabilities (from government and disability serving organizations) from across Nova Scotia to share and strategize around current key issues for NS youth living with disabilities. Participants will engage to share perspectives of barriers to participation for youth living with disabilities and hold space for ideas to emerge for how we can take action.

Examples of issues that participants could tackle together include:

                   - Information Access

                   - Education and Employment Opportunities

                   - Barriers to Participation in Society (both physical and attitudinal)

                   - Transportation

                   - Housing

                   - Other Issues of Importance to the Youth

It will be an interactive and participatory experience focused on building community and taking action – from changes in community to informing government legislation, programs and services. It will aim to empower youth living with disabilities, creating space for them to share their voices and experiences. The Summit will focus on creating opportunities for youth to learn from each other and build on the leadership skills needed to amplify their impact as valued members of their communities.

This event is being held as part of Partnership for Access Awareness Nova Scotia (PAANS) week, and is in partnership with the Nova Scotia League for Equal Opportunities (NS LEO), and HeartWood Centre for Community Youth Development. Camp Tidnish is located at 130 Irwin's Point Road, Amherst, Nova Scotia.
